Lloyd, Seton
(1902-1996)
   A noted English archaeologist who supervised a number of important excavations at ancient Mesopotamian sites in the twentieth century. Lloyd began his career in 1928 on an expedition that investigated Tell el-Amarna, site of the city built by the maverick Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten. From 1930 to 1937 he led a team from Chicago's Oriental Institute in digs at several sites near the Diyala River in northern Mesopotamia, including Tell As-mar (Eshnunna), Tell Agrab, and Khafa-jah. Later he acted as adviser to Iraqi archaeologists exploring the early Su-merian ceremonial center of Eridu. A specialist in mud-brick excavations, Lloyd wrote a number of important books about ancient Mesopotamia, of which Foundations in the Dust (1947) is the most famous.
